What people do not tell you about Self-Esteem

Here are a few things that no one really tells you about self-esteem:

1. It's a journey: Self-esteem isn't something that magically appears overnight. It's a journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance. It takes time and effort to build and maintain a healthy level of self-esteem.

2. It's influenced by external factors: Our self-esteem can be influenced by various external factors, such as societal standards, media, and the opinions of others. It's important to remember that these external factors don't define our worth. True self-esteem comes from within.

3. It fluctuates: Self-esteem isn't a constant state. It can fluctuate depending on our experiences, successes, failures, and the way we perceive ourselves. It's normal to have moments of self-doubt or low self-esteem, but it's important to remember that these moments don't define us.

4. It's not about comparison: Self-esteem is not about comparing ourselves to others. It's about recognizing and appreciating our own unique qualities, strengths, and achievements. Embrace your individuality and focus on your own progress rather than comparing yourself to others.

5. It's about self-compassion: Having self-esteem doesn't mean being perfect or never making mistakes. It's about practicing self-compassion and being kind to ourselves, even when we fall short. Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would offer to a friend.

6. It's about setting realistic expectations: Unrealistic expectations can harm our self-esteem. It's important to set realistic goals and expectations for ourselves, taking into account our abilities, limitations, and personal circumstances. Celebrate your achievements, no matter how small they may seem.

7. It's about embracing imperfections: No one is perfect, and that's okay. Embrace your imperfections and see them as part of what makes you unique. Remember that everyone has flaws, and they don't define your worth as a person.

8. It's about self-care: Taking care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally is crucial for building and maintaining self-esteem. Prioritize self-care activities that make you feel good, whether it's exercising, spending time in nature, practicing mindfulness, or indulging in hobbies you love.

9. It's about positively surrounding yourself: Surround yourself with people who uplift and support you. Positive relationships and a supportive social network can greatly impact your self-esteem.

Now not all of these will be applicable for your specific situation, but we will help you find ones that work best. Are you ready to give therapy a try? Connect with one of our team members today!
